10 tips to avoid a sour power bill

Created in partnership with Econnex

There’s no point denying it, winter is coming, and with it, the cold, the heaters, and the rising power bills. It’s the energy bill we all fear, the one that has us spitting pips, the one that squeezes us tighter than we squeeze ourselves under our oodies or doonas! Don’t worry, we’ve got some great tips that will help you cut down on your energy bill and give you some sweet – and warm - relief.

Here are 10 juicy tips for avoiding a sour power bill.

1. Settle for a kettle

Rather than using the stove to boil water, try using an electric kettle. Electric kettles are more energy efficient, faster, and just what you need for that sweet lemon tea.

2. Need a light? Use a lamp!

If you only need a small amount of light, consider using a lamp instead of your main light. You’ll still be able to see, but it won’t represent such a large segment of your bill.

3. Switch off

Remove the bitter taste of energy waste by switching off electronics when they’re not in use, especially devices with an LED clock.

4. Light up

Replace older incandescent lightbulbs with Energy Star certified LED light bulbs. They may seem a bit costly up front, but they use less energy and last longer, tang you very much.

5. Strip!

You heard us right, while you’re putting on those extra layers, plug your devices into an advanced power strip. These power strips sense when a device is on or off so it can switch companion devices on or off automatically.

6. Water way to save energy!

Regulate water flow and cut water heating costs by switching to an energy-efficient shower head. Warm showers for a fraction of the cost, lemmy at it!

7. Draw the curtains

Not with a pencil! It might make for beautiful art, but it wouldn’t save much energy. By keeping your curtains open during the day, you’ll help heat it more efficiently, then, by closing them at night, you’ll prevent heat from escaping so quickly.

8. Rug up

Place rugs and carpets on your floors to help retain heat in your home and avoid getting cold feet. No one wants cold feet. NO ONE.

9. Refresh your seals

Do the seals around your windows and doors need a refresh? Seal cracks and gaps to increase the effectiveness of your heating and cooling.

10. Now we’re cooking

Cut down on energy use by cooking with an air fryer or pressure cooker instead of an electric oven. And, in case you forget, here’s a handy rhyme to help you remember, “To use less power and keep cooking sweet, use air fryers or pressure cookers for the things that you eat!” Mmm… Lemon tarts.

If you really want to minimise your power bill, and ease the squeeze this winter, you might even consider switching to a cheaper energy supplier. Econnex provides an extensive, and always current (no pun intended) free comparison service of a range of energy providers, giving Australians the power to secure better prices.*
