Conceived in 2005, Etsy is a marketplace for unique and creative goods, giving artists and designers an outlet to sell their pieces to a worldwide audience.

The company’s mission is simple – “in a time of increasing automation, it’s our mission to keep human connection at the heart of commerce.” With 2.1 million active sellers, this mission has certainly brought it to the forefront of making it one of the biggest platforms for creative entrepreneurs.

The platform connects sellers with buyers globally and the products range from jewellery to clothing and vintage items. The focal point of the platform is that items are not mass produced. It provides buyers with an alternative in finding something that has a unique human touch.

Etsy & the Environment

With the impact of climate change and the environmental toll emissions at the forefront of most company policies, Etsy’s environmental impact is a value they hold in high regards. In 2016, they committed to powering its operations with 100% renewable electricity by 2020. The company met its goal in 2018, two years ahead of schedule.

With that in mind, its focus has now shifted to lowering its emissions by focusing on the shipping from its sellers to the buyer. In order to do this, Etsy became the first global e-commerce company to offset 100% of the carbon emissions generated by shipping. This means when someone buys an item from the platform, the company automatically purchases verified emissions reductions (offsets) through their partner 3 Degrees.  Money made from the offset purchase is put towards environmental projects.
